Ashwagandha Root

Extract

This ancient ayurvedic herb has been used for centuries to reduce stress and increase virility. Ashwagandha has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, provide longevity, and improve overall mood.

Benefits:

  • Helps combat the effects of stress
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Improves immune response

How it works:

Ashwagandha targets chronic stress by reducing the level of serum cortisol, which is the stress hormone. Ashwagandha has also been shown to act as a mood stabilizer for anxiety, exerting anti-anxiety effects similar to lorazepam. Ashwagandha helps improve immune response by increasing natural killer cell activity and expression of Th1 cytokines.

Side Effects:

Ashwagandha is generally safe when taken within the normal dosage range (300mg - 800mg). Large doses of Ashwagandha can cause abdominal pain and upset stomach.

Rhodiola rosea

An natural herb with adaptogenic properties that can reduces stress, fatigue and exhaustion. It was commonly used in Chinese, Scandinavian, and Russian traditional medicine as a physical restorative, and it remains a popular remedy for fatigue. It is also a brain-boosting nootropic believed to improve memory and cognition.

Benefits:

  • Decreases symptoms of fatigue
  • Increases neuromotor fitness
  • Enhances essential neurotransmitter production

How it works:

Rhodiola’s nootropic effects start within 30 minutes and can last for up to six hours. It suppresses the production and release of cortisol, a hormone closely related with stress. Rhodiola also increases the availability of epinephrine and norepinephrine, both of which are neurotransmitters associated with drive and energy. Increased levels of these neurotransmitters improves neuronal communication and positively impacts mood, reduces fatigue perception, and enhances cognitive abilities. Rhodiola is also believed to expedite the intra-brain movement of monoamines and other neurochemical messenger substances, improving processing and reaction time.

Side Effects:

Side effects are generally uncommon and mild. The risk of drug interactions is minimal. Most frequent side effects occur at high doses and are agitation, anxiety, and occasional headache.

L-Theanine

A naturally occurring amino acid found primarily in tea. It does an excellent job at relaxing without being a sedative. It is renowned for its excellent nootropic properties such as improving memory, enhancing the ability to learn, and providing a calming effect.

Benefits:

  • Increases relaxation and sleep quality
  • Enhances mood and reduces anxiety
  • Improves memory recall

How it works:

L-Theanine is quickly absorbed and crosses the blood brain barrier. It increases alpha-1 brain wave activity within 30-45 minutes of ingestion. Alpha-1 activity is highly associated with relaxation and attention. It also promotes production of serotonin, dopamine and GABA, which further back up these claims.

Side Effects:

L-Theanine is an amino acid that is well tolerated by almost all adults within normal doses (80-160 mg). Most common side effects are appetite suppression, blood pressure increase, insomnia and jitters.

Kava Kava Root Extract

Also known as Piper methysticum, this plant extract naturally reduces anxiety and promotes an increased feeling of well-being. It has been used as a psychotropic beverage in the South Pacific for centuries.

Benefits:

  • Helps relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Reduces stress and restlessness
  • Boosts immune response

How it works:

Kava kava activates GABA-A receptors, which has been shown to produce a calming effect. By decreasing beta adrenaline receptor activity, Kava kava has been shown to relaxes muscles. By stimulating flavokawains A and B, Kava kava may improve immune response by stimulating the production of white blood cells in the spleen.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Kava kava include headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness. These side effects are typically effect when taking large doses (250mg+).

Saffron Extract

Considered the most expensive spice on earth, saffron is known for its protective effects on the brain and its ability to balance moods through modulating serotonin production.

Benefits:

  • Relieves symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Improves immune function

How it works:

Saffron contains crocin, which is converted in the stomach to crocetin. Crocetin has been shown to increase levels of serotonin in the brain, which might explain its antidepressant effects. Saffron also contains safranal, which has been shown to stimulate GABA-A receptors and inhibit histamine 1 receptors. Saffron helps improve immune function by increasing white blood cell count in the body.

Side Effects:

Saffron is considered safe when taken within normal dosage range (30mg - 200mg).

Black Pepper Extract

This popular spice contains a molecule called piperine, which has been shown to increase absorption rates of other supplements.

Benefits:

  • Increased nutrient absorption
  • Improved metabolism
  • Enhances memory recall

How it works:

Piperine inhibits a process called glucuronidation, which is when a molecule (glucuronide) is attached to substances that are signalled for urinary excretion. Inhibiting this process can lead to increased nutrient absorption. Piperine can improve memory by increasing the production of serotonin and beta-endorphins, which are two important molecules involved in memory formation.

Side Effects:

Black pepper extract is considered safe when taken within normal dosage range (10mg - 30mg).

Vitamin D

This essential vitamin is necessary for the production of serotonin and has been shown to have an impact on overall mood.

Benefits:

  • Reduces symptoms of depression
  • Improves overall sleep quality
  • Enhance cognitive functions

Side Effects:

Vitamin D is considered safe when taken within normal dosage range (1000IU - 5000IU).
